Newcastle United 1-2 Manchester United

Manchester United restored their seven point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a come from behind victory over Newcastle United when the two teams met on Wednesday.

With Liverpool and Chelsea winning on Tuesday, United had seen their lead cut down to four points and that fact seemed to have played on their minds as the visitors got off to a bad start as Newcastle raced to the lead in the 9th minute after a blunder from Edwin Van der Sar saw the United keeper fumble a Jonas Gutierrez shot straight into the path of an onrushing Peter Lovenkrands who was left with a simple finish from six yards out.

The goal seemed to give a confidence boost for Newcastle who almost doubled the lead minutes later through Obafemi Martins whose long range effort narrowly missed the target. Just when it looked as if United were in for an upset, the visitors equalized in the 20th minute when Wayne Rooney latched on to John O'Shea's cross before smashing the ball past Steve Harper.

Nemanja Vidic had a great chance to put United in the lead but somehow managed to head wide of the target from just two yards out. United stepped up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded in the 56th minute when Ryan Taylor unconvincingly tried to chest Rooney's long ball to Harper but Ji Sung Park beat the Newcastle keeper to the ball, crossing it to Dimitar Berbatov made no mistake from close range.

Newcastle pressed forward in search of an equalizer and though Lovenkrands and Martins had decent chances, United hung on to claim all three points from the match.
