Netherlands 2-0 RomaniaThe Netherlands beat Romania 2-0 in Berne thanks to second half goals from Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Robin Van Persie. The win makes the Dutch only the sixth team in the history of the Championships to go through the group phase unbeaten.
Marco Van Basten made nine changes to his regular starting XI and gave Johnny Heitinga the captain's armband. Romania replaced the injured Radoi with Banel Nicolita and the suspended Dorian Goian with Gorin Ghionea. The Dutch did not start off in the fluent manner that they did against France and Italy, and took time to get into their stride. Romania had a couple of half chances too, with forward Adrian Mutu seeming determined to atone for his penalty miss against Italy. Holland had one very good chance when De Zeeuw and Huntelaar combined to set up Robben, but the Real Madrid forward shot a yard wide.
Romania were cautious in the second half, a bit surprising given that they already knew that Italy were beating France in the other game. Goalkeeper Lobont had to save a fine eight yard Van Persie effort, after the Arsenal forward had weaved his way into the Romanian box. Five minutes later, Klaas Jan Huntelaar opened the scoring, sending in an Ibrahim Affellay cross past Lobont. Huntelaar became the seventh Dutch player to score at Euro 2008 - Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder, Robben, Van Persie, Kuyt and Van Bronckhorst being the other six.Try as Romania did, they were simply unable to match the Dutch, and Van Persie wrapped things up with a ferocious 87th minute strike- Holland's ninth goal of the tournament.
The Dutch now finish with nine goals and nine points from the Group of Death. Quite impressive, and they must be favourites to win their quarterfinal against Guus Hiddink's Russia.
As for Romania, they failed to fire when they really needed to, and paid the price for it. Tags: Netherlands, Romania, Marco Van Basten, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Euro 2008 Posted: 20th June 2008 |
