Manchester United strolled to a 7-2 aggregate victory over AC Milan, one better than Arsenal’s win over Porto twenty-four hours earlier, to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

After a hectic end-to-end opening ten minutes, United were largely untroubled on a night which saw Real Madrid join Milan as tournament casualties.

They were set on their way in the 13th minute when Gary Neville was allowed space to measure a right-wing cross which was skilfully headed home from ten yards by Wayne Rooney.

Milan made the first half competitive but were undone immediately after the restart when the previously ineffectual Nani’s delightful cross from the left was forced home by Rooney.

Just before the hour mark, Ji-Sung Park made it three-nil with a fine first touch and clinical right-foot finish after a sliderule pass by Paul Scholes.

The EPL champions’ procession was briefly interrupted by an impressive cameo from old boy David Beckham, the highlight of which was a thumping 25-yard volley which rocked keeper Edwin Van der Sar back on his heels.

But Milan were outclassed on the night and United weren’t flattered by their fourth goal, an unattended Darren Fletcher heading home Rafael da Silva’s far-post cross on 87 minutes.
