Holders Manchester United reached the quarter-finals of this year’s Carling Cup after a schizophrenic game.

A dull-as-dishwater opening 45 minutes was followed by a thrill-a-minute end-to-end second half and United won in the last minute through flavour of the month, Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican striker latched onto a sliderule pass from Darron Gibson and cut inside a defender before finishing left-footed with aplomb.

Such quality was way beyond both teams before half-time. But the game had already livened up when a deflected cross on 56 minutes from Portuguese winger Bebe was adjudged to have crossed the line despite Kevin Foley heading clear.

Wolves equalised on the hour, George Elokobi powerfully heading home Paul Jones’ right-wing corner.

Stephen Hunt’s left-foot shot flicked the top of the crossbar moments later as Wolves’ Matt Jarvis began to cause problems down the left flank.

Park Ji-Sung made it 2-1 to United when he drilled a left-foot shot past wrong-footed Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessy in the 70th minute. But Kevin Foley responded in kind just six minutes later to make it 2-2.

Hernandez, the two-goal hero of last Sunday’s EPL win over Stoke City, was given nine minutes to work his magic again. And he did.
