Manchester United 3-0 West HamRooney (pen) 33 Nani 50
Berbatov 69
Manchester United comfortably saw off struggling West Ham thanks to a welcome first goal of the season from Wayne Rooney, albeit a penalty, and marvellous strikes from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov. The Hammers seemed to lack penetration throughout. But Avram Grant’s men now lie bottom of the EPL on goal difference with not a point to their name. Nani nearly gave the hosts the lead when the excellent Berbatov backheeled a raking Paul Scholes pass into his path. But Hammers’ keeper Robert Green pushed his shot onto the crossbar. They did go ahead when Ryan Giggs was hauled down in the area by Jonathan Spector on 33 minutes and Rooney confidently drilled the penalty past Green. Nani lobbed over when well-placed shortly before the turnaround. But five minutes after the restart he powered a left-foot shot past Green after a fine interchange with the improving Rooney. Nani turned provider on 69 minutes, when his chipped cross to the far post was photogenically volleyed home by Dimitar Berbatov – a goal the Bulgarian thoroughly deserved. West Ham’s Kieron Dyer struck the outside of the post moments earlier. But the Hammers offered little else other than Scott Parker’s left-foot shot which he scuffed wide.
