One-up from the first leg, United doubled their aggregate advantage moments before half-time. Chelsea equalised on the night with thirteen minutes remaining, despite being reduced to ten men seven minutes earlier. But United immediately scored again to clinch the tie. Chelsea had the better first-half chances, with Frank Lampard firing the best of them straight at United keeper Edwin Van der Sar on 15 minutes after a fine run by Florent Malouda. Nicolas Anelka was also inches off-target with two snapshots from the edge of the box. Javier Hernandez headed home a wonderful Wayne Rooney cross on 27 minutes but was ruled marginally offside. He also looked marginally offside on 43 minutes when he fired Ryan Giggs’ right-wing cross high into the net from two yards. But the referee’s assistant thought different. Chelsea midfielder Ramires was booked twice in eighteen minutes for fouls on Nani. Yet substitute Didier Drogba equalised on 77 minutes, controlling Michael Essien’s lofted pass and fired right-footed past Van der Sar. Within fifty-one seconds, though, United regained the lead, Park Ji-Sung applying a rasping finish to Giggs’ pass from 15 yards.
