Manchester United 2-0 Fulham
First-half goals from top-scorer Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia set up an ultimately comfortable victory for Manchester United, to leave them temporarily ten points clear at the top of the EPL.
United’s much-changed side had their fortune, however, as visitors Fulham made a bright start to both halves and had claims for offside against both United goals, especially Berbatov’s 12th-minute opener.
Bobby Zamora had the best of three early Cottagers half-chances, firing wide on eight minutes when well-placed just inside the penalty area.
United led four minutes later, Nani weaving his way through the Fulham rearguard before forcing the ball out to an offside-looking Berbatov who applied a neat right-foot finish.
Nani created United’s second, too, breaking down the left before his shot deflected to Valencia at the far post who nodded home from three yards, with possibly only one Fulham defender between him and the goal.
United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak pulled off a fine save from Fulham substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen’s free-kick on 61 minutes. Fulham fans thought it was a goal as the net ruffled. The referee thought it was a goal kick.
But Darron Gibson and Anderson were wasteful with half-chances as the game drifted towards its climax.
