Manchester United 0-1 BesiktasTello 19 Manchester United failed to clinch top spot in Champions League Group B when a youthful line-up fell to a deflected Rodrigo Tello strike for the Turkish champions. It was United’s first Champions League defeat at Old Trafford in 24 matches, Besiktas’ first points of this season’s competition and their first away win since a 2-0 triumph at a pre-Abramovich Chelsea in 2002. Tello’s speculative left-footed effort was diverted past a wrong-footed Ben Foster in the United goal by left-back Rafael. And for all United’s possession, they only seriously threatened an equaliser in a frantic final ten minutes, with Turkish international keeper Rustu Receber making two fine saves in stoppage time, the second particularly brilliant. United manager Alex Ferguson made eight changes to the side which steamrollered Everton in the EPL last Saturday. And he fielded a teenage strike pair in Danny Wellbeck, making his Champions League debut, and Federeco Macheda, in his second Champions League start. But United’s youngsters flattered to deceive and often looked “over-anxious” in Ferguson’s words. It was naiveté on the part of full-back Rafael da Silva which led to the game’s decisive goal. Caught upfield by a quick break from the Turkish side, he was unable to close down Tello as the midfielder shaped to shoot and only deflected the ball with his shoulder past Foster’s left hand. Besiktas could have doubled their advantage after another excellent break, only for Michael Fink to hit the post with his side-footed effort from ten yards past a beaten Foster. Substitutes Michael Owen, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra gave United momentum late on. But Rustu was equal to Macheda’s close-range header in stoppage time. And when Wes Brown got above his own keeper Foster to head the resultant corner goalwards, Rustu pulled off a wonder save, diverting the ball away from Gary Neville as the defender looked to convert the rebound.
