Manchester United 0-0 Everton (Everton winning 4-2 on penalties)

Manchester United's hopes of securing an unprecedented quintuple bit the dust on Sunday as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by a determined Everton side on penalties.

United fielded a weakened line up with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin Van der Sar not even travelling with the team. Federico Macheda was handed his first ever start for United but the Italian youngster failed to build on his impressive displays in the last two matches.

As expected, Everton dominated the proceedings but with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the centre of the defense, the Toffees failed to create many chances in the game. Instead it was United who went closest to taking the lead late in the first half when Danny Welbeck's attempt took a deflected off Joleon Lescott before smashing against the post.

Everton started the second half strongly and almost took the lead when Tim Cahill released a stinging shot from 25 yards out only for Ben Foster to pull off a low save to deny the midfielder. It proved to be Everton's lucky night when Welbeck was fouled inside the area by Phil Jagielka but referee Mike Riley dismissed the penalty appeals leaving Alex Ferguson furious on the sidelines.

With both the teams unable to score even during extra time, the action moved into a penalty shootout. Though Cahill missed his chance from the spot, Tim Howard pulled off excellent saves to deny Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand as Leighton Baines, Phil Neville and James Vaughan converted their chances with Jagielka sending Toffees fans into frenzy by converting the winning penalty.
