Manchester City 3-1 Newcastle United

Martin Petrov scored a goal and set another as Manchester City came from one goal behind to beat Newcastle United 3-1 in their Premiership match on Saturday.

The visitors had taken the lead through a 29th minute goal by Obafemi Martins. But City equalized nine minutes later through Martin Petrov and Emile Mpenza put the hosts in the lead with a headed goal two minutes into the second half before Elano completed the proceedings three minutes from full time.

The hosts were on the attack early on and Elano forced a brilliant save from Shay Given in the 11th minute. However it was Newcastle United who scored the first goal of the match as Martins latched on to Geremi's long ball before lobbing the ball over Joe Hart.

It was not long before City scored a deserved goal as Elano released Stephen Ireland on the right who curled the ball into the cross and Petrov slotted the ball past Given. Elano was pulling the strings for City in the midfield as his through ball released Ireland clear of the Newcastle defense, though he was unable to provide the finish.

The home team finally took the lead two minutes into the second half as Petrov raced past Steven Taylor before crossing the ball to Mpenza who was left with a simple header to slot home the goal. Newcastle were finding it tough to get back into the game as Micah Richards, Mpenza and Ireland both came close to doubling the lead for City.

The match was all over three minutes before full time when Elano hit a stunner of a free kick from 25 yards out to crown his superb performance with a goal that put the result beyond doubt.
