Malawi’s Russell Mwafulirwa was hero-turned villain as both sides exited the competition.

Frederic Kanoute put Mali ahead after goalkeeper Swanick Sanudi mishit a clearance straight to him on 37 seconds. And Seydou Keita’s stunning free-kick doubled their advantage on four minutes.

Russell headed Malawi back into contention after 58 minutes but headed over an open goal from three yards with twenty minutes remaining, when a draw would have put Malawi through.

Mamadou Bagayoko sealed the Flames’ fate with an 85^th minute header.
