Lyon 0-3 Rangers

Even the most optimistic of Rangers fans would not have predicted this score line on a famous night of European football for the Scottish Premier League side. It was not just the score line, but the manner in which Walter Smith’s side went to the Stade de Gerland and absorbed everything that Lyon threw at them. For long periods Lyon kept possession, but were unable to convert this into meaning full chances.

Those who watch Champions League live may say that Lyon were unlucky, indeed their man of the match Juninho hit the woodwork twice and the way the French side started the match, must have led many to think that this was going to be an easy home win as Lyon pressured the visitors goal for most of the first 22 minutes.

Then the turning point as Rangers were awarded a corner which found its way to Lee McCulloch on the penalty spot. He had no hesitation in planting his header in the Lyon net and in doing so stunned the home crowd into silence. Lyon continued to press but were unable to score an equalising goal and started the second half still in arrears.

On 48 it was the turn of Daniel Cousin to stun the crowd as he received the ball inside the penalty area, turned his marker and shot into the bottom right hand corner to send the visiting fans wild in their celebrations. On 52 they were ecstatic as Beasley was played through the middle by Cousins and calmly beat the Lyon keeper Vercoutre giving the visitors a famous win.

Rangers now find themselves very close to qualifying for the knockout stages whilst Alain Perrin and his Lyon side are now dangerously close to being eliminated at the group stage.
