Liverpool 4-1 PortsmouthLiverpool bounced back from two defeats in a week to pull off a brilliant display of attacking football against Portsmouth in their 4-1 victory on Saturday.
Liverpool were off for a comfortable victory after taking a 2-0 lead in the first 16 minutes with Yossi Benayoun putting his side in the lead while Sylvain Distin scored an own goal three minutes later. Benjani Mwaruwari got one back for Portsmouth in the second half, but a late brace by Fernando Torres put the result beyond Pompey's reach.
Pompey were on a run of six straight wins on the road but never really got started as Liverpool raced to the lead in the 13th minute when Harry Kewell's cross from the left wing was met with a stinging volley by Benayoun that flew past a helpless David James and into the net.
Liverpool doubled the lead three minutes later when Sol Campbell put in a great tackle to deny Torres but the ball bounced against Distin's legs before rolling into the net for an own goal. Pompey were on the back foot for most of the first half and were unable to create any real chances.
However the visitors came out in the second half full of purpose and were rewarded in the 57th minute when Benjani latched on to Kanu's cross before slotting the ball past Jose Reina from eight yards out.
Though Portsmouth pressed forward in search of an equalizer, it was Liverpool who found the net 10 minutes later when Torres side-footed James' poor clearance that had taken a deflection off Hermann Hreidarsson's boot.
The Spanish striker completed the proceedings 5 minutes before the final whistle when he volleyed Steven Gerrard's flick on to score his side's fourth of the night. Tags: Liverpool, Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres, Pompey, Sol Campbell, Portsmouth Posted: |
