Liverpool 0-1 Manchester United

Manchester United repeated last season's success with a convincing 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield to maintain the pressure on leaders Arsenal. A lone goal from Argentine hit man Carlos Tevez was enough to send the Kop into a groaning frenzy.

The win means that Manchester United maintain their unbeaten record at Anfield for the sixth year running. However the opening period belonged to Liverpool who showcased some exciting football in front of the home fans.

In the first 45 minutes it did look like Liverpool had the upper hand and their efforts were assisted by a jittery Edwin van der Sar, who was hindered more than once by his own players. However alert players ensured the Dutch keeper was not embarrassed.

On the first occasion, he tried to clear Steven Gerrard's free-kick only to run into a crowd of his own defenders. However Anderson was present at the post to save Harry Kewell's shot. However Torres should have killed off a rebound, but only nodded it wide.

However United made Liverpool pay for this costly error when a Ryan Giggs corner found its way to Carlos Tevez, who was actually behind Reina, but still managed to nod home his eighth goal of the season. After the break, Torres had a golden chance to equalize, but his feet seemed rooted in cement and the chance went abegging.

Liverpool piled on the pressure, but Ferdinand and Vidic ensured there would be no celebrations at Anfield ahead of Rafa Benitez' crucial meeting with co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks. Liverpool's dream of finally clinching a Premiership title appears to be just that as they are 10 points off leaders Arsenal.
