Lithuania 2-1 Faroe IslandsLithuania retained slim hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2008 Championship as they beat a lackluster Faroe Islands 2-1 in Kaunas. The win keeps Lithuania in the hunt although any qualification hopes will have to be considered as excessive.
The home team started off at a rapid pace and Edgaras Jankauskas proved to be a handful for the Faroe defence. He broke the deadlock early on in the first half as he drilled a fine goal after Saulius Mikoliunas' free kick was blocked by Faroe goalkeeper Jákup Mikkelsen.
Jankauskas latched onto the rebound and tapped in from close range. Minutes later he had the chance to double Lithuania's lead, but his close-range header flew just wide. Faroe then went on the attack and were almost rewarded as Súni Olsen unleashed a shot from the edge of the penalty area. However he was unable to find the target.
Lithuania keeper ydrunas Karčemarskas was called into action just two minutes after the break and had to make a brilliant point blank save to keep off Faroe Islands.
Finally Tomas Danilevicius doubled Lithuania's advantage shooting home from close range after collecting a good pass from the left by Audrius Ksanavicius on the 53rd minute. Later on Arunas Klimavičius and Danilevicius had good chances to increase Lithuania's lead, but their shots were well over the crossbar.
Faroe Islands grabbed a consolation goal in injury time through Jacobsen who chipped home over the Lithuania keeper.
Lithuania occupy the fifth place in Group B with ten points from nine games, while Faroe Islands are still searching for their first points from nine games.
