Inter Milan 2-1 ChelseaMilito 3 Kalou 51 Cambiasso 55
Chelsea must beat Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on March 16th to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. They will feel confident, having been a little unlucky to lose in the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. But they will be without keeper Petr Cech, who was stretchered on the hour with a potentially serious knee injury. Carlo Ancelotti’s side fell behind within three minutes, Diego Milito cutting inside John Terry’s loose challenge and firing past an exposed Cech at his near post. Didier Drogba thumped a spectacular free-kick against the crossbar in the 15th minute, while Inter’s Samuel Eto’o mis-kicked a glorious close range opportunity on 33 minutes. Kalou appeared to be tripped by Walter Samuel as he bore down on goal in first-half stoppage time, his extravagant dive under the challenge possibly persuading the referee not to give a penalty. But he equalised on 51 minutes with a fine 20-yard right-foot shot from Branislav Ivanovic’s pass. Within four minutes Inter regained the lead, Esteban Cambiasso arrowing a superb 20-yard drive past Cech after his first shot was blocked. And Cech damaged his knee five minutes later, landing awkwardly after making a routine catch, which means Henrique Hilario may play in the second leg.
