Holland 2-1 BrazilFelipe Melo (og) 53 Robinho 10 Sneijder 68
Holland came from behind to dump favourites Brazil out of the World Cup at Port Elizabeth.
From a position of almost complete control, the Brazilians threw the match away in a twenty minute second-half spell which saw them concede twice – the first a defensive calamity – and go a man down after Felipe Melo’s dismissal. Brazil took the lead when Felipe Melo’s pass through the centre of the Dutch defence was swept into the net from the edge of the box by Robinho. Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenberg produced a fine right-handed stop to deny Kaka as Brazil dominated.
But shortly after half-time, keeper Julio Cesar and Felipe Melo collided in attempting to clear Wesley Sneijder’s left-wing cross, allowing the ball to drop into the unguarded net.
Sneijder headed the winner from Dirk Kuyt’s near-post flick. And Felipe Melo lost his composure, seeing red after stamping on prone Dutch winger Arjen Robben. Tags: Holland, Brazil, World Cup, Felipe Melo, Robinho, Wesley Sneijder Posted: |
