Ghana and Australia shared the spoils of an entertaining Group D encounter at Rustenberg, with the Socceroos holding on for a draw despite being down to ten men for 65 minutes.

Asamoah Gyan drew the Black Stars level from the penalty spot after Harry Kewell handled Jonathan Mensah’s goalbound drive and was dismissed.

Aussie keeper Mark Schwarzer denied Kevin Prince-Boateng and Gyan as Ghana pressed.

An end-to-end second period somehow produced no further scoring. And although Ghana had most of the chances, Australia had the better ones.

Substitute Scott Chipperfield headed over from close range before Luke Wilkshire’s shot was saved at point-blank range by an on-rushing Kingson.

Ghana applied considerable late pressure and Mensah headed Sulley Muntari’s free-kick over the angle of post and crossbar before Schwarzer athletically tipped over Quincy Owusu-Abeyie’s 20-yard left-footed drive.
