Fulham 2-0 Wigan Athletic

Andy Johnson broke his duck for Fulham with a brace as the Cottagers secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic on Wednesday.

Johnson had endured a miserable time at Fulham since completing a £10.5million move from Everton in the summer but showed glimpses of returning back to his best by first putting the Cottagers in an early lead in the 10th minute before putting the match beyond Wigan by doubling the lead on the hour mark.

Both the teams were keen to return back to winning ways, Fulham not registering a win in their last seven matches while Wigan had lost their last three matches. After a cautious opening to the game, Fulham took the lead in the 10th minute, albeit in a controversial manner, when Johnson converted Paul Konchesky's cross from close range though the striker looked to be in an offside position.

Wigan slowly settled down to create chances of their own with Maynor Figueroa going close from a long range effort. Paul Scharner should have had put Wigan back on level terms midway through the first half when Amr Zaki found the midfielder with a perfect cross but Scharner somehow managed to head the ball over the bar from just two yards out.

Zolton Gera came close to doubling the lead for Fulham three minutes into the second half when his shot clipped the post before going out of play. However it was not long before the hosts managed to score a second goal with Johnson hitting the target after losing his marker to convert Jimmy Bullard's free kick in the 60th minute.

Wigan tried to stage a come back late in the game but were unable to create any real chances as Fulham managed to hold on to their two goal advantage to secure vital three points from the game.
