France 1-2 South AfricaMalouda 70 Khumalo 20 Mphela 37 South Africa became the first hosts to depart a World Cup at the group stage. But they very satisfyingly took a disgraced French side with them. Les Bleus were missing a number of players reportedly at the centre of squad disaffection throughout the tournament. They also had midfielder Yohann Gourcuff harshly dismissed before half-time. And to cap their shame, coach Raymond Domenech refused to shake hands with opposite number Carlos Alberto Parreira at the final whistle. Bafana Bafana were the better side throughout. They went ahead when Bongani Khumalo headed home Siphiwe Tshabalala’s corner. Gourcouff was then dismissed for accidentally elbowing MacBeth Sibaya. And Katlego Mphela bundled home the second before the break. Mphela struck the post on 51 minutes and was denied by Lloris’s fine save as hopes grew that South Africa might qualify on goal difference. But those hopes evaporated when Florent Malouda tapped in Franck Ribery’s pass.
