Finland 0-0 Poland

It was an entertaining game at Helsinki's Olympiastadion on Wednesday, but both Finland and Group A leaders Poland were unable to press home their advantage when they clashed in their Euro 2008 qualifier. Poland are still on top of Group A, while Finland also have a chance of going through, but both sides will have wished they had got an outright win.

Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc and Finland goalkeeper Jussi Jääskeläinen were the heroes of the game as they had to hit top form to keep their opponents at bay. A full house at the Olympic Stadium roared the home side on, but neither side was able to break the deadlock despite having enough chances to do so.

Mariusz Lewandowski had two early chances for Poland as he appeared to have gotten away in the first quarter hour,. However he was unable to give the finishing touch to the two chances that fell his way. This polish attack woke up the Finns who then proceeded to create some of their own attacking chances.

Alexei Eremenko Jr unleashed a fine shot on the half-hour mark only to find an impenetrable wall in the form of Boruc. Daniel Sjölund also tested out the Polish keeper three minutes later, but Boruc was alert enough to keep him out. Jacek Krzynówek and Euzebiusz Smolarek also had decent chances before the break, but were unable to convert them.

Four minutes into the second half Smolarek had a golden chance to put Poland ahead as he collected Jakub Błaszczykowski's pass, but was unable to beat the excellent Jääskeläinen. Smolarek again tested the Finnish custodian, but the Bolton Wanderers goalie was equally alert and tipped Smolarek's shot away.

Eremenko came close for Finland on 68 minutes, but his shot hit the post. Jonatan Johansson had a late chance, but his header just flashed over, while at the other end Poland's Marek Saganowski hit the post. Just before the final whistle both sides had golden chances to kill the game, but Błaszczykowski and Sjölund were unable to convert.

Poland stay on top of Group A with 21 points from 11 games, while Finland are in the second spot with 19 points from 11 games.
