Famagusta 1-1 Tottenham(agg 2-7)
Martin Jol and his Premier League side had the benefit of a 5 goal lead going into this UEFA Cup match, but no-one would have predicted that the second leg would have ended in this fashion. Indeed had it not been for Robbie Keane equalizing in the second half, Jol would have yet again been under enormous pressure.
Although they were in a no win situation having effectively demolished Temur Ketsbaia’s side at White Hart Lane, this was by no means a satisfactory result, especially for the several thousand Tottenham fans who traveled to Antonis Papadopoulos to watch UEFA Cup football.
Striker Jermain Defoe was given his wish of starting a game from the start after starring in the first leg victory, but in this second leg was guilty of missing a host of good chances to put the result of the second leg beyond doubt.
With Famagusta short on chances and Tottenham unable to execute theirs the match remained level at the break, but the home team came out the brighter as they sensed a growing frustration in the visiting team.
Famagusta finally took advantage on 54 when de Matos Fabinho received a ball from Nikolaos Frousos and then volleyed past Paul Robinson giving him no chance. With the tie going away from him Jol became much more animated and resorted to Keane on 75 as a last ditch after loosing patience with his strikers.
Keane made an almost instant impact when he connected with a cross from Gareth Bale to score the equaliser on 78. Despite their being time for a winning goal, neither team looked in danger of scoring again and it was left to the referee to blow his whistle and end the match.
