FC Metalist 2-3 Everton(agg 3-4)
With twenty minutes of this second leg to play, Premiership side Everton were facing early elimination from the UEFA Cup competition. At the end of the match the 27500 home fans who came to watch UEFA cup football at Metalist Stadium were silent and wondering what might have been.
That Myron Markevych the manager of FC Metalist and his players had shown they are no light weights was little consolation as the Ukrainian Premier League side finished their European campaign for this year.
The home side started the game which much more vigor and deservedly took the lead on 22 when Edmar Aparesida was on the end of good build up play and had the confidence to slot the ball past Tim Howard in the Everton goal.
Everton tried to score an equalizing goal but had to wait until after the break when Metalist were unable to clear the ball from their penalty box. It eventually found its way to Lescott who was only a few feet out and swept the ball into the net to pull his side level on 48.
David Moyes saw his side level for only a matter of minutes though as Metalist hit back almost immediately on 52 when Mahdoufi was on hand to knock in the rebound from a long range Rykun shot which flew back off the post into his path.
Everton looked short of ideas at this point and Moyes sent on Nigerian striker Victor Anichebe a goal was needed sooner rather than later. Their reward came on 72 as McFadden collected a pass from the substitute and shot another equaliser past the Metalist keeper Alexandr Goryainov.
Everton ensured victory on 88, as Anichebe fired in another goal which sent Everton into the UEFA Cup group phase. Tags: Everton, UEFA cup, FC Metalist, David Moyes Posted: |
