FC Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea Anelka 17, 54
Chelsea cruised past a Copenhagen side lacking in match practice to set up a likely place in the Champions League quarter-finals. A goal in each half from Nicolas Anelka, and a good showing from the strike pairing of Anelka alongside Fernando Torres made the difference, with the Spaniard having his best game in a Blues shirt. Torres had a seventh-minute effort blocked by Copenhagen keeper Johan Wiland. But ten minutes later, Anelka fired Chelsea ahead, nutmegging Wiland from 12 yards after latching onto a misplaced pass by ex-Chelsea man Jesper Gronjkaer. Chelsea’s strikers shared regular chances before the break; though Wiland only made one further save, from Torres on 22 minutes. Copenhagen were livelier after half-time, but Chelsea scored again on 54 minutes, Frank Lampard’s superb left-foot reverse pass finding Anelka, who shot right-footed across Wiland. Five minutes later, Wiland saved Torres’ left-foot shot and the unlucky £50m-man saw another effort cleared by Oscar Wendt, sixteen minutes from time. The hosts were playing their first competitive match after Denmark’s winter break. And it showed until the final quarter when Martin Vingaard, Pierre Bengtsson, Domingues Claudemir and Dame Ndoye made Chelsea keeper Petr Cech work. But Cech’s goal wasn’t seriously threatened.
