Everton 3-1 Birmingham CityLee Carsley scored late in injury time to deny Birmingham City a well deserved point when the two teams met in their Premiership clash on Saturday.
Oliver Kapo had equalized for Birmingham after Yakubu had given Everton an early lead. The visitors matches Everton in almost all areas of the pitch but were unlucky to have returned empty handed thanks to a close range shot by Carsley with just minute to spare with James Vaughan adding the third with the final touch of the game.
Everton started the match strongly and looked more likely to be the scorers than the visitors with Yakubu having a great chance of putting his team in the lead. The Nigerian striker finally got his goal 10 minutes into the match when Steven Pienaar found him with a perfect cross and Yakubu made no mistake from just six yards out.
Kapo had one of the few chances of the half to put Birmingham back on level terms but saw his shot saved brilliantly by Tim Howard.
Yakubu had two great chances to double Everton's lead but was wasteful on both the occasions as the hosts went into the second half frustrated at not having killed off the game. Yakubu continued to create chances in the second half coming close with a 25-yard effort which was saved by Maik Taylor.
The visitors managed to keep Everton at bay and came up with an equalizer 10 minutes before full time when Kapo rose high to meet Gary McSheffrey's corner to head home past a helpless Howard.
Birmingham failed to clear Phil Neville's throw in and the ball went straight to Carsley who drove it past Taylor from 20 yards out to leave the visitors heart broken. There was still time for a third when Vaughan was played in by a Carsley's flick on and the youngster showed great speed to race past the Birmingham defenders to slot home Everton's third goal of the game.
