Everton 3-3 Manchester United Pienaar 39 Fletcher 43
Cahill 90 + 1 Vidic 48 Arteta 90 + 2 Berbatov 66 Two stoppage time goals gave Everton an unlikely point in a remarkable encounter which Manchester United could have won comfortably before the late drama. Everton’s Mikel Arteta and United’s John O’Shea struck the woodwork in the first quarter before the hosts took the lead on 39 minutes. Arteta’s shot was well saved by Edwin Van der Sar but Leon Osman coolly found Steven Pienaar from the rebound and the South African slotted home. United were level four minutes later when Darren Fletcher side-footed home Nani’s terrific right-wing cross and went ahead when Nemanja Vidic headed home another Nani cross on 48 minutes. Dimitar Berbatov’s superb control, run and right-foot shot from Paul Scholes’ raking crossfield pass put United 3-1 up in the 66th minute. And although there were chances at either end in normal time, Scholes and Berbatov missed the clearest, and United paid for their profligacy. A minute into stoppage time, Tim Cahill powerfully headed home Pienaar’s left-wing cross. A minute later, Arteta’s deflected shot from ten yards flew past Van der Sar after Cahill headed Leighton Baines’ cross into his path via another ricochet. And Everton were breaking dangerously again when referee Martin Atkinson blew the final whistle.
