Everton 1 - 6 ArsenalArsenal produced what can only be described as champagne stuff in their opening game against Everton at Goodison Park, routing the Toffees by a 1-6 margin. It was expected to be a tough game for the Gunners as they had let go of key players in the summer and because Everton were regarded as a tough team after finishing fifth last season. However Arsenal had a walk in the park in this game. The Gunners started in typical fashion passing the ball at will and finding chinks in Everton's defensive wall. On 28 minutes Nicklas Bendtner passed to Cesc Fabregas, who immediately laid the ball into Denilson's path who slotted home for the first goal. After 37 minutes, the Gunners were two up when Thomas Vermaelen slotted home Van Persie's free-kick. The game was effectively over on 41 minutes when a Fabregas free-kick was headed home by William Gallas. Three minutes after the break it was 4-0 as Fabregas was allowed a free run into the box from where he comfortably beat goalkeeper Tim Howard. The Arsenal skipper was on target again on 69 minutes when he collected a long ball from Almunia and slotted home without facing any resistance. Eduardo and Aaron Ramsey were introduced by manager Arsene Wenger and the Croatian star did not disappoint grabbing Arsenal's sixth of the night. Everton got a consolation goal from Louis Saha in the last minute. The game was marred by controversy with manager David Moyes furious with Man City for turning Joleon Lescott's head. However the collective blame was with the Toffees who did not rise to the occasion. The last time they lost by such a heavy margin was way back in 1958 when Arsenal had slotted six goals past them.
