Everton 0-3 Portsmouth

Portsmouth bounced back from two straight defeats to register a comfortable 3-0 win over Everton in their Premiership encounter on Saturday.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring early in the 11th minute for Portsmouth while Glen Johnson doubled the lead five minutes before the half time whistle. Everton missed a chance to reduce the deficit in the 47th minute when Ayegbeni Yakubu failed to convert from the penalty spot as Defoe scored his second goal of the match to complete a convincing victory for his side.

Having lost their opening two games of the season, Portsmouth started the game keen to open their account in the league. They were rewarded in the 11th minute when Defoe latched on to a flick on by Peter Crouch before slotting the ball past Tim Howard.

Defoe once again tested Howard with a stinging drive but the Everton keeper was equal to the challenge this time around and pulled a stunning save to deny the England striker. Everton dominated the chances for most of the first half but were unable to beat David James who was in imperious form as he pulled off great saves to deny Mikel Arteta twice.

Portsmouth doubled the lead in the 40th minute when Johnson and Defoe linked up brilliantly to let the full back score his first goal of the season. Everton were handed a life line in the 47th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Vaughan was fouled inside the area by Johnson but Yakubu failed to convert from the spot with James easily saving the weak shot.

It was all over eight minutes past the hour mark as Defoe scored Portsmouth's third goal of the match with a delicate chip over Howard after being played in by Sean Davis
