England 3-0 Russia

England's resurgence continued with yet another 3-0 victory over Russia in their Euro 2008 qualifying match on Wednesday.

Michael Owen announced his return to form with two great goals in the first half before Rio Ferdinand completed the proceedings 6 minutes before full time to give 3 vital points to England as they look to bring their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign back on track.

England started the game with an unchanged side that had defeated Israel over the weekend. Facing against a team that had conceded just one goal in the last eight matches, England had an uphill task to break down the defense, but did not have to wait long to take the lead.

Gareth Barry, who made his second successive start for England after being left out in cold for seven years, curled in a delightful ball that missed everyone except Owen and the Newcastle striker's shot hit the post before going in.

England continued to press forward and very nearly made it 2-0 when Heskey's deflected shot fell rolled from under Vyacheslav Malafeev to Owen but the 27-year old slipped at the vital moment with an empty goal at his mercy.

Russia had a great chance to equalize when Konstantin Zyrianov put the ball into the net, but his effort was ruled out for hand ball. And minutes later Owen made them pay with his 40th goal for his country when he hit a great volley from Heskey's flick on to double the lead.

The visitors came out attacking into the second half and had two great chances to get back in the game when Dmitri Sychev shot flashed just wide of the post and then the striker was inches from reaching a cross that would have gone into the net.

England wrapped up the match six minutes from full time when Rio Ferdinand latched on to a pass from Owen before smashing home the ball past Malafeev. The win means England now need just 5 points from the remaining three matches to assure their place in the Euro 2008 finals next year.
