A strong second-half display by Fabio Capello’s England side saw them come from behind to overcome skilful African champions Egypt in an entertaining Wembley friendly.

Substitutes Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips found the net as England banished memories of a first-half in which only the visitors passed the ball with confidence.

Frank Lampard should have put England ahead on five minutes, but his left foot close-range effort was straight at Pharaoahs keeper Essam El Hadary.

Egypt were rewarded for their early enterprise when Mohammed Zidan took advantage of Matthew Upson’s slip on the edge of the box and beat England keeper Robert Green with a neat right-foot finish.

Crouch and Michael Carrick replaced Jermaine Defoe and Lampard at half-time and within eleven minutes, England were level, Crouch sweeping home Garth Barry’s right-wing cross after England’s first slick passing move of the night.

Wright-Phillips gave England the lead on 75 minutes. El Hadary parried a fierce drive by another substitute James Milner but was made to look foolish by some late curve on Wright-Phillips’ well-struck rebound from 15 yards.

An offside-looking Crouch completed an ultimately satisfying night for Capello with a similar goal to his first, Wright-Phillips this time the provider.
