Derby County 0-1 Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic notched up its first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Derby County in their Premiership encounter on Saturday.

Antoine Sibierski came off the bench to grab the winner in the 82nd minute after Wigan had dominated in the first half. Derby had been earlier reduced to 10 men after Claude Davis was shown a red card in the 56th minute. Derby manager Paul Jewell had handed debuts to all of his three new signings but they were unable to prevent a 17th consecutive home defeat for the Rams.

Wigan looked the better team throughout a physical first half as Marcus Bent had a great chance to put the visitors in front when Antonio Valencia crossed the ball from the right flank but the 29-year old striker blazed his shot high off the target.

Wigan had another chance of breaking the deadlock 10 minutes before half time when Michael Brown latched on to a poor clearance by Robbie Savage but his shot from 20 yards out was saved brilliantly by Lewis Price.

The visitors continued to attack in the second half with Bent once again going close to breaking the deadlock. Derby's hopes of somehow latching on to a point received a huge blow when they were reduced to 10 men with Davis being shown a red card for elbowing Bent.

The hosts went into their shell, keen to snatch a point but Steve Bruce introduced Sibierski in the 81st minute and the striker responded with a goal in the next minute, driving a low shot past Price to grab his side's first away win for the season.
