Chelsea 6 - 1 Derby
Chelsea "avenged" their horror FA Cup defeat to Barnsley with a 6-1 trashing of hapless Derby County at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The win means Avram Grant's side have an outside chance of clinching the Premiership title although Manchester United look favorites at the moment.
Frank Lampard was the hero for Chelsea netting in four goals and proving that he is well worth the amount that Chelsea seem strangely reluctant to pay him. It was he who started the goal fest at Stamford Bridge netting in the first through a penalty on 28 minutes when Lampard was brought down by Leacock.
Leacock had come on in the 15th minute to replace Alan Stubbs. Lampard slotted in the penalty by sending Roy Carroll the wrong way. After that the floodgates opened up and Salomon Kalou sealed the game for Chelsea in the 42nd minute when Roy Carroll’s clearance landed straight at the Ivory Coast striker's feet.
After the break, Chelsea continued to mount attack after attack on Derby and were rewarded in the 57th minute when Lampard latched onto a Joe Cole cross and slotted home. And it was Cole who made it 4-0 in the 64th minute when Anelka's shot was parried away by Carroll.
Lampard made it 5-0 in the 66th minute when he sent home a screamer from 25 yards out. Every attack seemed to be goal bound for Derby now, but they managed to grab a consolation when substitute David Jones managed to beat Petr Cech.
However this was only after Lampard had scored his fourth goal of the night on 72 minutes. Chelsea will need to keep churning out such results especially as both Manchester United and Arsenal are still to visit Stamford Bridge.
