Chelsea clinched the EPL title, cruising past carefree and careless Wigan to notch their biggest win of the season, and the biggest in their history. Needing victory to secure top spot, they banished early nerves by taking a sixth-minute lead when Nicolas Anelka volleyed home right-footed after Florent Malouda chested the ball into his path. And the result was put beyond reasonable doubt after half-an-hour when Wigan centre-back Gary Caldwell hauled down a goalbound Frank Lampard and was dismissed. Didier Drogba, chasing the golden boot award for the EPL’s top scorer, sulked at Lampard’s insistence on dispatching the penalty past Latics reserve keeper Mike Pollitt. But all spats were forgotten after Chelsea’s barnstorming second-half. Salomon Kalou made it 3-0, from close-range after a well-worked one-two with Lampard. Anelka volleyed home the fourth from Branislav Ivanovic’s floated far-post cross. Drogba finally scored Chelsea’s 100th of their EPL season, heading home Lampard’s cross seconds after Pollitt saved his spectacular overhead effort. And he finally scored a penalty for Chelsea’s sixth, conceded by Mario Melchiot’s foul on Ashley Cole, before completing his hat-trick by tapping in Joe Cole’s cross. Ashley Cole completed the scoring with a 90th minute volley from another Joe Cole cross.
