Chelsea made it three home wins in a week, in three different competitions when they breezed past a hapless Bolton Wanderers to book their place in the Carling Cup’s last eight.

Chelsea also made it thirteen goals without reply, with a dominant display from first whistle to last.

Bolton manager Gary Megson said after the game that his side were “as bad as we’ve been all season.”

But teams playing better than his would have been beaten on the night, as Chelsea made light of manager Carlo Ancelotti’s changes, which include a spell on the bench for talismanic striker Didier Drogba and midfield stalwart Frank Lampard.

They were already in control when they took the lead on the quarter-hour mark, Paulo Ferreira’s inswinging left-wing cross headed home by Salomon Kalou from close range.

A minute later, Chelsea keeper Henrique Hilario paid the price for saving Matt Taylor’s well-struck shot with his face. The impact knocked him dizzy and he had to be replaced by Ross Turnbull shortly afterwards when he lost his balance again.

There was better luck about Chelsea’s second goal in the 27th minute. Florent Malouda’s misplaced near-post header hit Bolton defender Zat Knight, rebounding back into his path, and he lashed home the fortunate rebound.

As Bolton pushed forward after half-time, Chelsea picked them off almost at will with impressive counter-attacking.

Young striker Daniel Sturridge, making his first Blues start, passed up two opportunities in two early second half minutes.

But on 67 minutes, Portuguese midfielder Deco showed him how it should be done, rifling home from the edge of the box after Joe Cole and Drogba set him up.

Ivan Klasnic hit the post on 85 minutes in a rare Bolton raid.

But Cole and Didier Drogba combined again for Chelsea’s to complete the scoring in the 89th minute, Drogba heading home Cole’s hanging far-post cross.
