Chelsea were surprisingly held at Stamford Bridge by an injury-hit and previously out-of-form Everton in an encounter full of freak goals and comic defending.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men conceded their first EPL goals at Stamford Bridge since their 2-1 opening day victory over Hull.

And so poor and unlucky were they at defending set-pieces that Everton looked like scoring with every attacking setpiece, which moved manager Ancelotti to say after the game: “Football is strange, no?”

Brazilian striker Jo forced Blues keeper Petr Cech into a fine right-handed save with a left-foot shot from the edge of the area before Everton took a 12th minute lead.

Full-back Leighton Baines whipped in an inswinging free-kick from the right and French striker Louis Saha’s header rebounded off Chelsea captain John Terry and back off the post onto Cech’s back before finally crossing the line.

Just as in the midweek Champions League tie against Apoel, Chelsea had turned matters round by the mid-point of the half.

Didier Drogba fired in the equaliser with a rapier-like finish from the edge of the box after a determined barge forward by defender Ricardo Carvalho and a deft pass by Frank Lampard.

And Nicolas Anelka made it 2-1 on 23 minutes, toe-poking the ball home from eight yards after the Toffees got stuck trying to clear a corner from the right.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Everton levelled again, Yakubu rifling a right-foot shot past Cech when the ball fell to him off a prone Carvalho on the edge of the six-yard box.

Drogba put Chelsea back in front just before the hour with a languid volleyed finish to Branislav Ivanovic’s right-wing cross.

But it was all-square again five minutes later when Drogba’s headed clearance of a Johnny Heitinga’s free-kick cannoned back over an out-of-position Cech off the back of Saha’s head.

Remarkably, there were no further goals or calamities.
