Chelsea fell to their first home EPL defeat of the season, to a Manchester City side who retook fourth place as a result, as well as doing rivals Manchester United a huge favour in the title race.

Carlo Ancelotti’s remain a point ahead at the EPL summit. But they finished the match with nine men.

Substitute defender Juliano Belletti saw red after bringing down Gareth Barry in the penalty area on 76 minutes. And five minutes later Michael Ballack received his second booking for a clumsy challenge on Carlos Tevez.

Chelsea were 3-1 down by then, despite taking the lead just before half-time.

After a turgid first 40 minutes, Frank Lampard converted Joe Cole’s pass with a right-foot shot. But City equalised in stoppage time when Carlos Tevez shook off two Chelsea defenders and mishit a shot past flat-footed keeper Henrique Hilario.

Six minutes after the interval, Chelsea were caught upfield, leaving Craig Bellamy to beat last man Jon Mikel Obi and place a left-foot shot past Hilario.

Tevez made it 3-1 from the spot after Belletti’s dismissal. And Bellamy slid home Shaun Wright-Phillips’ cross with three minutes remaining.

Lampard scored a stoppage-time penalty for Chelsea after Barry fouled Nicolas Anelka.
