Chelsea 2-2 Manchester United(Chelsea win 4-1 on penalties)
Chelsea avenged their Champions League final defeat to Manchester United by beating the English champions 4-1 on penalties to hand Carlo Ancelotti his first trophy as the Chelsea manager. Both the teams were keen to strike an early psychological blow on their title rivals and it was Chelsea who went closest to breaking the deadlock soon after the kick off in the Community Shield. The United defense failed to deal with Frank Lampard's corner, allowing Branislav Ivanovic a great chance to score from close range only for Patrice Evra to divert the ball on to the post. United recovered from the early scare to take the lead in the 10th minute when Nani beat Ivanovic before slotting the ball past Petr Cech and into the goal. United stepped up the pressure in search of a second goal and should have had scored at least one more with Park Ji Sung and Dimitar Berbatov both having great chances only to be denied by some superb saves by Cech. Chelsea went into the second half with renewed vigor and were back on level terms in the 52nd minute thanks to some poor keeping by Ben Foster. The United keeper failed to clear Florent Malouda's cross leaving Ricardo Carvalho with a simple header to level the scores. United were left fuming in the 71st minute as Chelsea took the lead under controversial circumstances. Michael Ballack looked to have elbowed Evra but the Blues continued to play even though the French international lay on the ground injured with Ballack passing the ball for Frank Lampard who made no mistake from close range. Just when it looked as if Chelsea had managed to win the match in normal time, Wayne Rooney scored a dramatic late equalizer to push the game into a penalty shootout. Having already lost to United once in the penalties, Chelsea and Cech were better prepared this time around with the Blues keeper saving penalty attempts from Ryan Giggs and Evra to help his side win the Community Shield 4-1 on penalties.
