Chelsea 2-1 Manchester UnitedLuiz 54 Rooney 29 Lampard (pen) 80 A controversial late penalty kept Chelsea hanging on in the EPL title race, consigning leaders Manchester United to their second EPL defeat of the season. Blues; substitute Yuri Zhirkov fell under minimal challenge from United centre-back Chris Smalling on 80 minutes and Frank Lampard crashed home the spot-kick. Chelsea deserved the win, however, controlling the second half as United had the first and creating many more chances. United went ahead on 29 minutes when Wayne Rooney drove a superb low right-footed shot past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech’s right hand from 25 yards. United keeper Edwin Van der Sar made a wonderful double save to deny Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic just before half-time. But he was beaten nine minutes after half-time when centre-back David Luiz fired a right-foot shot past him from Ivanovic’s flick-on. Rooney should have put United in front in the 64th minute but shot across the face of goal after being put through down the left by Nani. Zhirkov’s right-foot shot deflected off Nemanja Vidic onto the post after 82 minutes. While United sub Fabio da Silva’s 87th-minute shot was smothered by Cech. And Vidic was dismissed in stoppage time for his second yellow card after fouling Ramires. Tags: EPL, Manchester United, Yuri Zhirkov, Chelsea, Edwin Van der Sar Posted: |
