Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United
Chelsea ensured that the race for the Premiership title goes down to the wire with a thrilling 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday. The Stamford Bridge faithful were treated to some fine football as both teams ended the game tied on 81 points, but with Manchester United having the better goal difference.
The game began on a somber note with the teams mourning the loss of Frank Lampard's mother, Pat. Both sets of players wore black armbands as a sign of respect. The game started off with Chelsea looking the better side and creating all the better chances.
Michael Essien had an early chance with his drive forcing a save from Edwin Van der Sar. United got an early blow when Nemanja Vidic was forced out with what looked like a facial injury. Owen Hargreaves replaced Vidic with just 9 minutes on the clock.
Joe Cole had a golden chance to put the home side ahead in the 20th minute, but his shot crashed against the crossbar. Cole once again had a chance in the 31st minute, but his shot was just wide. Finally the pressure told on United in the 45th minute when a beautifully weighted ball from Drogba found Michael Ballack who made no mistake with his header.
After the break United came hard, but it was only a grave mistake by Ricardo Carvalho that allowed Wayne Rooney to equalize. However the England striker was taken off as he appeared to suffer from a hip injury.
Nicolas Anelka came on for Paulo Ferreira as the home side desperately looked for a winner. They were rewarded with a penalty in the 84th minute when Essien's cross hit Michael Carrick's arm. Ballack calmly put away the penalty and with it United's hopes of sealing the title at the Bridge.
