Chelsea 1-3 Manchester UnitedKalou 83 Valencia 41 Hernandez 76 Berbatov 90
Manchester United overcame a late Chelsea rally to win an entertaining Community Shield contest at Wembley. United had the edge throughout the afternoon yet would have fallen behind in the first half but for a fine save by veteran goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, who brilliantly turned aside a Branislav Ivanovic header.
As it was, they went in ahead at the interval when Wayne Rooney’s pinpoint half-volleyed cross from the right was deftly finished by Antonio Valencia from ten yards on 41 minutes. Chelsea were restricted to a series of narrowly off-target long-range efforts as they pressed for an equaliser. And they were caught out with fourteen minutes remaining when Valencia’s right-wing cross was curiously bundled home by star summer signing Javier Hernandez, whose mishit close-range right-foot shot diverted into the net off his nose. Salomon Kalou set up a grandstand finish with his 83rd-minute right-foot shot after Van der Sar parried a Daniel Sturridge drive into his path. And United’s defending was fraught in the closing stages before they eased the tension with a breakaway on 90 minutes, Nani ending a bout of “keep-ball” with a well-weighted pass to Dimitar Berbatov, who exquisitely lobbed the ball into the net.
