Chelsea 1-1 Tottenham HotspurTottenham Hotspur collected their first point of the new season after holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in their Premiership clash on Sunday.
Chelsea were on course for a third successive win in the league when a 27th minute goal by Juliano Belletti gave them the lead but Darren Bent scored his first goal of the season on the stroke of half time to ensure that his side will avoid their worst start to the season by picking up a point at Stamford Bridge.
Dimitar Berbatov was once again absent from the squad as Tottenham manager Juande Ramos deciding to go ahead with Bent as the lone striker supported by Luka Modric and Giovanni Dos Santos. Chelsea struggled to break past a disciplined Spurs defense in the early stages of the match with the visitors content to play a waiting game and try and hit the Blues on the counter.
Frank Lampard had the best chance of the match early on when he trapped Joe Cole's dummy before attempting a chip over Heurelho Gomes with the Spurs keeper sprinting backwards to successfully tip the ball over the bar.
Michael Essien came the closest to breaking the deadlock when his driven effort smashed against the cross bar. The pressure finally told on the visitors as Chelsea took the lead in the 27th minute when Bent tried to clear a controversial Chelsea corner but only managed to hit the ball straight on to Belletti and the ball deflected over the goal line.
The visitors equalized on the stroke of half time when Bent was played in by Modric and the striker made no mistake from close range to score his first goal of the season. Chelsea stepped up the pressure in the search of the winner in the second half but Spurs hung on to claim a vital point from the game.
