Chelsea 1-1 Everton

(AET, 90 minutes: 0-0, Everton win 4-3 on penalties)

Chelsea’s defence of the FA Cup which they won in both 2009 and 2010 came to an end after a dramatic fourth round replay penalty shoot-out at Stamford Bridge against 2009’s beaten finalists Everton.

Phil Neville rifled home the vital penalty after Everton came from behind in both the match and the shoot-out.

Nicolas Anelka’s spot-kick was saved by Everton keeper Tim Howard after Chelsea’s Petr Cech turned aside Everton’s opening penalty from Leighton Baines.

And Ashley Cole fired his effort over, leaving Neville to book a home tie with Championship outfit Reading in round five

Chelsea had the better of the chances in normal time. Howard made two fine first-half saves from Florent Malouda after Phil Jagielka inadvertently headed a Frank Lampard free-kick against his own post.

And he made an even better one in the second half to deny Lampard, while Everton’s Marouane Fellaini netted late on, following-up after Cech saved Baines’ right-foot drive, but was flagged offside.

Lampard gave Chelsea a 104th-minute lead, driving the ball home right-footed from Didier Drogba’s penalty-box chest-down.

Then Baines took the tie to penalties with a perfectly-struck, curling, 20-yard free-kick with a minute of extra-time remaining, to set up the shoot-out victory.
