Bolton 0-0 MiddlesbroughIt was a disappointing result for Bolton Wanderers at home against Middlesbrough in their Premiership clash last Sunday. After Bolton drew with Bayern Munich in their UEFA Cup clash new coach Gary Megson would have been hoping for a better show in the Premier League.
Boro boss Gareth Southgate on the other hand will have been pleased to see his side secure at least one point from their away game. Megson knows that Bolton need to kill these games against lower sides if they are to survive in the Premiership.
Bolton though were hampered by the absence of Nicolas Anelka and El-Hadji Diouf. This meant Kevin Davies was the lone man upfront and he did his best, but on Sunday that was not good enough. Gary Speed had a decent chance on 16 minutes and should have put Bolton ahead from a free-kick from 20 yards out. Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer was beaten, but the ball ended up in the side netting.
Southgate elected to make an early change brining on Emanuel Pogatetz for Andrew Taylor in the 29th minute. Gary O'Neil had a decent chance for Boro on the 40th minute, but his shot was blocked.
On 45 minutes, Davies made a fine run through the Middlesbrough defence only to see his shot go narrowly wide. In the 53rd minute Danny Guthrie picked out Nolan at the back post, but Schwarzer made a fine save. Ivan Campo was guilty of missing a simple chance in the 62nd minute when he chose the wrong post off a Davies pass.
Stelios Giannakopoulos came on for Nolan in the 65th minute, but was unable to make much of a difference. Aliadiere then tested Bolton goalkeeper Jaaskelainen on 71 minutes, but the Finn made a superb save to deny Boro. In the last minute of normal time, Andy O'Brien's cross found Campo, who again directed his header straight at Schwarzer.
Bolton are on the 18th spot on the Premiership table with 8 points from 13 games, while Middlesbrough are 17th with 10 points from 13 games.
