Bolton 4-2 Tottenham Davies 31, 76 (pen) Hutton 79

Tottenham suffered yet another Champions League hangover, comprehensively beaten by an impressive Bolton side. Two wonderful individual goals late on gave Spurs hope after going three-nil down. But Martin Petrov’s terrific breakaway goal squashed those hopes. Matthew Taylor nearly took advantage of sloppy Spurs defending when firing over the bar after only 32 seconds. Bolton went ahead on 31 minutes, Taylor picking up the loose ball when Patrice Muamba dispossessed Sandro and finding Kevin Davies, who fired home left-footed. Spurs’ dangerman Gareth Bale struck the post with a 53rd-minute free-kick but Bale’s marker Gretar Steinsson doubled the Trotters’ advantage with a right-foot shot from 15 yards three minutes later. Bolton were three-up on 76 minutes, Davies converting a penalty for Younes Kaboul’s push on Lee Chung-Young after William Gallas conceded possession. Alan Hutton’s run inside two defenders and excellent curling left-foot shot made it 3-1 on 79 minutes. And it was 3-2 eight minutes later, Bale’s half-cleared free-kick falling to substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko, whose spectacular left-foot volley arrowed into the net. But Gallas was dispossessed in stoppage time when charging forward looking for an equaliser and Davies’ superb header sent Petrov clear to seal the points with his left-foot shot.
