Bolton 2-1 Arsenal
Sturridge 38 Van Persie 49
Arsenal’s chances of winning this year’s EPL title were reduced to mathematical by this last-minute defeat to Bolton in a game they needed to win to maintain their title challenge.
Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was at full-stretch to deny Theo Walcott on two minutes and Cesc Fabregas on 16 minutes.
Bolton’s Chung Yong-Lee passed up a fine shooting opportunity in the 24th minute and forced a fine save from Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny on 37 minutes.
And they went ahead from the resultant corner. Gary Cahill’s header was cleared off the line by Samir Nasri and Daniel Sturridge headed home the rebound.
Bolton should have doubled their advantage when Sturridge was bundled over in the penalty area by Johan Djourou on 46 minutes. But Szczesny easily saved Kevin Davies’ poor spot-kick.
And Arsenal levelled three minutes later, Robin Van Persie playing a crisp one-two with Fabregas before driving the ball low left-footed past Jaaskelainen from 20 yards.
Arsenal dominated thereafter and Nasri should have made it 2-1 on 70 minutes, but fired at Jaaskelainen after being sent clear, with Cahill blocking the rebound.
And Tamir Cohen headed the winner from Matt Taylor’s 90th-minute near-post corner after Szczesny denied Johan Elmander.
