Blackburn 2-1 Larissa(agg 2-3)
Although the Premier League side won this leg of the tie, an aggregate score of 2-3 meant Mark Hughes side lost the chance to go through to the UEFA Cup group stages. Ewood Park hosted just over 20 000 fans who came to watch UEFA Cup football and hopefully a good result for the home team.
Unfortunately for them the Cypriot side took an early lead which left Blackburn with an even bigger task, having lost the first leg 2-0. Silva Cleyton found himself with a deflected ball only 10 yards from the Blackburn goal and continued his clinical scoring in the tie by placing the ball past Brad Friedel into the bottom corner.
The result was very much beyond doubt now as the home side knew they had to score first to give themselves any chance of progressing further. Blackburn slowly managed to create chances of scoring a goal and were finally rewarded just before the break when Dunn was adjudged to have been brought down in the penalty box and Matt Derbyshire scored from the penalty spot.
With a slight glimmer of hope the home team started the second half much the better of the two teams and scored another goal on 51 when Warnock converted a cross from Bentley to give the home side the lead on the night.
Blackburn then threw everything forward for the rest of the match to try and score the two goals which would give them the aggregate win. Unfortunately they couldn’t convert any more of their chances however hard they tried as Larissa successfully hung onto their lead with manager George Donis who played for Blackburn used his defensive substitutes to stem the Blackburn attacks.
