Birmingham City 3-2 Wigan Athletic

Birmingham City secured it first win in five matches with a five goal thriller in the 3-2 victory over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Steve Bruce's side twice came back from behind before bagging the winning nine minutes from the final whistle, leaving Wigan with a fifth successive defeat in the Premiership. Marcus Bent had put visitors in the lead but Birmingham equalized through Olivier Kapo. However Bent got his second goal 12 minutes into the second half but the hosts once again equalized through Liam Ridgewell before Kapo got the winner in the 81st minute.

Birmingham started the game strongly but it was Wigan who created the first real chance of the match when Antonio Valencia found Jason Koumas unmarked in the penalty area but the Welsh striker dragged his volley wide of the target.

The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute when Bent latched on to a long clearance by Mario Melchiot before slotting the ball home from 12 yards out. However it was not long before the hosts equalized.

Daniel De Ridder's corner kick was handled by Paul Scharner and the referee had no hesitation at pointing to the spot. Kapo stepped up to take the penalty kick and made no mistake to pull Birmingham level. Wigan pressed forward in search of a goal and were rewarded in the 59th minute thanks to some bad defending by Birmingham.

Melchiot's long cross was lost between a misunderstanding between Stephen Kelly and keeper Maik Taylor and Bent raced forward to control the ball before slotting it into an empty net. However the lead lasted just 8 minutes as Birmingham once again equalized through Ridgewell tapped in a flick on from two yards out.

The hosts finally took the lead nine minutes before full time when Kapo took control of the possession on the edge of the area before smashing home a drive past Kirkland to grab all three points for Birmingham.
