Birmingham City 1-0 Bolton Wanderers

Birmingham City moved further away from the relegation zone with a polished performance in the 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Olivier Kapo scored the only goal of the match in the 37th minute handing Bolton a 5th defeat in six games in front of a near capacity St Andrews crowd. The win was a fully deserved one for Birmingham after they dominated large portions of the match and could have easily scored more.

Birmingham made their intentions clear early in the game as Cameron Jerome nearly scored in the 2nd minute, taking advantage of confusion in the Bolton defense but was unable to connect properly with his shot and the ball went wide of the post.

Birmingham had a penalty appeal turned down after Sebastian Larsson was brought down by Jlloyd Samuel in the area but referee Phil Dowd adjudged it to be a fair challenge. Bolton's first chance of the match fell to Kevin Nolan but the midfielder saw his shot go wide from 15 yards out.

Birmingham continued to create chances and nearly broke the deadlock through Muamba when the midfielder headed a Larsson free kick towards the target only for Jaaskelainen to make a superb save to deny Birmingham.

Birmingham finally took the lead in the 37th minute when Kapo raced forward to connect Larsson's long ball at the far post and managed to beat a flaying Jaaskelainen to score his second goal for his new club.

Bolton were unable to provide the final touch as Birmingham defended brilliantly with Mehdi Nafti diving in to make a number of tackles to deny Bolton the space to work out a response. Birmingham had a late chance to double the lead when Jerome was fouled near the edge of the area, but Larsson saw his free kick attempt smash against the bar.

The loss, coupled with Derby County's win against Newcastle sees Bolton slump to the foot of the table with just three points from six matches while Birmingham rise to 12th position with 7 points from six games.
