Birmingham City 4-1 Blackburn Rovers

Birmingham City were unable to avoid relegation even though a brilliant attacking display saw them emerge comfortable 4-1 victors over Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the season.

Needing a victory if they were to have any hopes of avoiding relegation, Birmingham took the lead through David Murphy in the first half. However Blackburn struck back in the second half to equalize through Morten Gamst Pedersen. The hosts stepped up the pressure late in the game and were rewarded for the efforts as Cameron Jerome scored a brace before Fabrice Muamba grabbed a fourth in injury time.

Birmingham received an early blow when James McFadden was injured during the warm up and Mauro Zarate was handed a rare start for the club. Both the teams struggled to create any real chances but the hosts took the lead on the half hour mark thanks to an error by Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel as Murphy's shot some how managed to slip under the keeper and into the net.

With Aston Villa struggling against West Ham, Blackburn came out in the second half on the attack and took the lead in the 49th minute when Jason Roberts latched on to a poor pass by Damien Johnson and the ball found its way to Pederson who slotted it past Maik Taylor to pull Blackburn level.

Birmingham pressed forward late in the game and once again took the lead in the 73rd minute through Cameron Jerome with a delicate chip over Friedel and added a second a minute from time. Muamba headed home a fourth goal in injury time but the result was unable to save Birmingham from being relegated to the Championship.
