Ivica Olic’s goal, with the last kick of this Champions League quarter-final first leg, gave Bayern Munich the narrowest of advantages to take into next Wednesday’s return at Old Trafford.

In a role-reversal from United’s 1999 final triumph over the German side, Bayern conceded an early goal but recovered to win in the last minute.

And United goalscorer Wayne Rooney injured his ankle during the build-up to Bayern’s winner, and had to be helped from the field.

His left-foot close range finish gave United the lead in the game’s first attack, after 64 seconds, from Nani’s deflected right-wing free-kick.

But Bayern gained the initiative and both Olic and Hamit Altintop passed up opportunities with the United goal at their mercy midway through the half.

Bayern dominated the second half, with United keeper Edwin Van der Sar making a string of decent saves.

And Rooney’s deflection on Franck Ribery’s 77th minute free-kick finally drew Bayern level.

Nemanja Vidic headed sub Ryan Giggs’ 83rd-minute corner against the crossbar, the Welshman’s first touch.

But on 92 minutes, Olic sped into the box on the blind side of a hesitant Patrice Evra and swept a left-foot shot past Van der Sar to snatch victory.
